Doctor's strike

Doctors have been given increases after hospitals around Durban operated with skeleton staff for three days when doctors embarked on a strike demanding better wages this week outside the King Edward Hospital.

Doctors around the province had given the Department of Health until 29 May 2009 to meet with their demands for better working conditions and pay increases when doctors staged lunch-time pickets outside hospitals. Doctors embarked on a full-blown strike on Monday and Tuesday before the Health Department resolved the issue on Wednesday morning.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced that the lowest paid doctors will receive up to a 53 percent pay increase.

Four suspects were arrested, after attempting to hold up a doctor's house in Sheringham Road Overport on Monday morning 15 June.

The suspects split up inside the house when police arrived. One of the thugs jumped over the high back wall and fled. Police from Mayville entered the house, and found four people tied up. While searching the house, they found one suspect hiding behind the bed. The police took two gardeners in for questioning.

While police were interviewing the gardener's, one of their phones rang. Police overheard the gardener being asked by the caller if it was "safe to come out" from inside
the bedroom cupboard.

Market relocation put on hold

Stall holders have been given another week to trade after hundreds of informal traders from the Warwick Avenue area gathered in Botha Park to protest the relocation of traders to the material management centre.

According to the chairperson of the Early Morning Market Association. Harry Ramla the march was deemed illegal at the last minute after an eThekwini Municipality official withdrew the application to protest to the City Hall demonstration went ahead in the park peacefully." We were able to speak to members of the local council and the national executive committee after the protest.

Sydenham loses out on ward budgets

Tax payers and concerned residents voiced their concerns over the little money that was allocated to the wards in Sydenham and surrounding areas, when the eThekwini Municipality announced the local ward budgets on Sunday at the City Hall.

Ward 25, Democratic Alliance Public Relations Councillor, Alex Christians slammed the budget and the poor turnout from the community, non governmental organisations and sports bodies who had a chance to voice their concerns. Approximately fifty people attend the meeting for Zone 10.

The majority were from Ward 25 which encompasses Sydenham, Asherville and Sherwood. Krish Kumar Head of the Treasury in eThekwini Municipality put forward the budget.

Black dollar scam-be warned

Members of the Commercial Crimes Unit, banking crimes Section are concerned about the increase in reported incidents of Black Dollar Scams. They say the scamsters are becoming bolder.

The black dollar scam is an old scam where members of the group will approach unsuspecting individuals and inform them of the availability of black dollars that can be cleaned with a certain chemicals.

The con artists will always use different stories but the underlying theme is the black dollars, which can be cleaned with a special chemical that only the fraudsters know about.

Violent attack on Soofie Mosque

"They were merciless." These were the words of Hazrath Soofie whose family were the victims of a robbery at the mosque that carries the family's name.

The Soofie Mosque was robbed last week Thursday at about 2.40pm. Javed Soofie said:"They hit my mother (76) with the gun on her mouth and punched my daughter til she became
unconscious. They held knives to my grand children's necks." Soofie said five armed men held the family up. The Soofie family were relaxing outside, in their garage area when five males entered the yard. Soofie said that his son approached the suspects to ask if they required any assistance.
