Halaal or haraam
There has been controversy surrounding the halaal status of commercially farmed chickens in South Africa
According to various documents, newsletters and leaflets currently circulating across the country, the haraam status of carrion chickens have been concealed 'under the guise' of halaal'. One Port Elizabeth based publication, The Majlis, reported that a group of four men conducted an inspection of the Earlybird Chicken Plant in Olifantsfontein, Gauteng, earlier this year
They reportedly made the following observations: - The slaughterers questioned allegedly admitted that it was impossible to recite Tasmiyah (Quranic verse to be recited at the time of slaughtering) on every chicken
