Soofie Mosque for Mini Town

Work has begun in Durban‘s Mini Town on a massive miniture model version of the 113 year-old, National Monument - the Soofie Saheb Mosque in Riverside.

According to Stephen Nadasen, Public Relations Officer for Mini Town, they have completed phase 1 of the project.

"The structure has been completed using ABS plastic and meranti wood. It took our team one week to copy the design from photographs and building plans and make it a reality," said Nadasen.

Nadasen said the entire model building project would take place in stages at the Mini Town in Marine Parade drive. The Mini Town team hopes to have the entire building project completed by the end of December 2008.

The Om Shanti Om girl, Deepika Padukone, who also happens to be the cover-girl of the newly launched magazine called 'Jade'! That she looks a million bucks on the cover will be an understatement. Instead let us tell you that the publishers of 'Jade' did not go wrong by choosing her to be the cover-girl of their launch issue! This issue has got the Padukone babe speaking all about her upbringing, her roots, her favourite food, places etc...

And even before you could ask for it, the 'Jade' guys did quiz her about Ranbir Kapoor, to which, the lady in red, replies, "Finding the right person makes a lot of difference. We don't need anyone else, we just love being with each other!"

Tough stance yields results for Sydenham Heights

The fortunes of Sydenham Height's residents have changed since they launched the ‘we mean business campaign’ to rejuvenate the area. Since January, when the campaign was launched, major improvements have taken place in the building.

In an article featured in The Weekly Gazette in January 2008, Sydenham Height's residents took a stand against alcohol and drug abuse. With the absence of security guards the unruly youth took over the flat.

Residents believed that the majority of the night time revelers where from the suburbs in surrounding areas. Residents rallied together and cleaned out an area known as the cage, where various illegal activities were taking place.

The man himself has reportedly stated, "You bring any actress of today, all of them are younger than me! What can I do about it? I am so lucky to be surrounded by beautiful, young ladies all the time."

Drunk drivers skating on thin ice

Although ample warnings have been sent out to motorists regarding intensive law enforcement for the transport month the number of drunken drivers arrested this past week has been alarming.

Spokeswoman for the Department of Transport safety and community liaison Nonkululeko Mbatha stated that the drivers who are arrested driving under the influence of alcohol would face problems of losing their drivers licence or their licences being suspended. Mbatha backed up her statement by adding that this month alone in the Verulam Magistrates Court several drivers had their licences suspended for five years.

Bonela homes to be renovated

A low turn out at an important housing feedback meeting did not deter Bonela Ward Councillor Richard Mngadi from delivering his feedback report to the community on Sunday 1 November at the Bonela Secoundary School.

The eThekwini Municipality has earmarked fifty houses in Bonela that would be renovated in the next few months. Those residents are now breathing a sigh of relief while others remain disgruntled at the selection process for the renovations. Mngadi said that the municipality had conducted a technical assessment of all the housing units in Bonela.

The assesment team had identified fifty houses in the Palace Place area that needed urgent renovations. "Houses earmarked for renovations had serious structural problems.

Don’t Move!

A well-executed police plan proved highly successful when fourteen wanted suspects were arrested in a pre-dawn raid at the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement on Sunday 26 October.

The Sydenham Crime Prevention Unit and members of the Crime Intelligence Unit swooped in on several shacks where these dangerous criminals were hiding.

The Police Units had already known their target before entering the sprawling maize of shacks.

Units split-up and approached the settlement under darkness from different directions leaving no escape routes for any fleeing suspects. Once the shacks were identified the SAPS airwing helicopter, hovering above, switched on its spotlight.
