Off-Duty Policeman Gun Down Hijacker

Off-Duty Policemen Gun Down Hijackers Two off-duty Newlands police officers shot and killed two armed hijackers in Skipdale Road, Newlands on Thursday, 29 November.
It is believed that the suspects had attempted to hijack the police officers who were driving along the road.
Newlands SAPS Communications Officer, Const Koetsie, said that the officers were seated in a Toyota Corolla. They had stopped to allow motorists to enter the driveway when two men approached the car on the driver's side.
"The hijackers opened the door of the car and pointed a firearm at one of the police officers. They saw his police uniform and demanded his firearm.
The officer was pulled out of the car and his firearm was taken at gunpoint. One of the policeman jumped out and shouted out to the hijackers to drop their weapons. He then fired several rounds at the hijackers," said Koetsie.
The hijackers were hit several times as they fled down Skipdale Road. One of the hijackers dropped the policeman's firearm and fled together with the other suspect between houses and into bushes.
"Police followed a trail of blood into bushes where they found one of the suspects dead. The second suspect died further on.
A white Golf with occupants, who are believed to be the hijackers' accomplices, fled at a high speed. An inquest docket has been opened and investigations are continuing," said Koetsie.
